The players need to practice during the most irregular hours and they need to be able to consistently follow any instruction rendered by the manager or coach. They need to be fit both mentally and physically.

They must possess a skill to become apt for the game itself. There is also the need to be flexible in traveling and it is common for the hockey players to experience injuries in their entire span of career. Their usual injuries are caused by falls, player contacts, or the direct contact with high stick or puck.

Among the players who are well-known in the world are Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, Eddie Shore, Doug Harvey, Guy Lafleur, Phil Esposito, Stan Mikita, Jean Beliveau, and many others.
